5 Steps to Ditching Cable aka: Live the Internet Delivered TV Lifestyle!

5 Steps to Ditching Cable aka: Live the Internet Delivered TV Lifestyle!

1. Be sure you have an internet service that will match your streaming requirements. Netflix suggests at least 5 Mbps, but you need to multiply that by the number of streams your household will engage in at the height of traffic.

Test your Internet speed at peak hours (6p.m. – 10 p.m. M – F) here: http://testmy.net/ Speeds of 10 Mbps can drop to 3 Mbps – though that issue is now rare.

2. Test different Antennae.  If you are lucky with an HD Antenna you may get all the major networks, PBS and some others in high quality video. If you are that lucky, the cord cutting will be easier on you. This antenna analysis tool will help set your expectation: http://www.antennaweb.org/Address.aspx

3. Dont plan on relying on the apps on your Smart TV or PlayStation to provide you with your streaming needs. Spend on a product built for streaming. We recommend Apple TV. It offers access to many of the most popular streaming services. There are features like iTunes, Airplay, and iTunes Radio that marry perfectly with your existing Mac or iOS device.

4. What do you want to stream? Research your services for best fit. Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, HBO Go. Know what they offer and what you will not get with each option.

5. Understand Web TV and watch this arena develop in the next few years. Sling TV (not to be confused with Sling Box). Check this article to get caught up to what Sling TV is and is not

And finally – have realistic expectations. It WILL be a change, and you will have moments of frustration. Focus on your reasons for switching, and in time this will feel normal. If your reasons for change include getting past mindless channel surfing, living by TV schedules, and/or saving money, you will not regret this. I plan on long walks, bike rides, and calls to my mom and friends if the quality or selection of TV offerings in my post cable life fall short.
