In the first part of this series, I’ll be discussing Sonos, what it is, and their 3 smaller all-in-one speaker models.

First off, what is Sonos? Sonos is a system of HiFi, or high fidelity, wireless speakers and audio components. It makes listening to your digital music collection a true pleasure, using any of your devices, over a dedicated wireless network. Now, I know when most people think about wireless music they tend to think of unstable, distorted, tricky-to-set-up music systems. With Sonos it couldn’t be more the opposite. They’ve created excellent hardware and software with “rock-solid” wireless. Never any distortion, drop-out, or low quality sound. Let’s start with their 3 smaller all-in-one speakers. The Play 1, Play 3, and Play 5.

As described right on Sonos’ website, and truly so, the Play 1 is mini but mighty. All three models have wonderful sound. Great highs, mids, and lows. But maybe consider the Play 1 for a smaller room in the house. Perhaps a kitchen or bathroom. This is the one of the three I’ll be talking about that I personally own and I love it! I have it placed in the corner of my kitchen, on the counter. It’s amazing how crystal clear the sound is and how deep the bass can go for a speaker thats under 7x5x5in in dimension. At low and louder volumes, the sound is never disappointing or uninvolving. You’ll find that music will often grab your attention and not just be background filler. The next step up in the line is the Play 3, which is slightly larger in size and offers an even better experience. They call it the Play 3 because of the amount of drivers (speakers) inside the unit: 2 woofers and one tweeter. After this guy, you’ve got their top speaker in this series, the Play 5. Yep. You guessed it. Play 5 for 5 speakers inside this handsomely designed unit. The Play 1, 3, and 5 are priced at $199, $299, and $399, respectively.

So, great. They have wireless speakers that sound good. But how do they work? With any Sonos speaker the only wire coming out of them is the power cable. The only thing they need is an outlet. Then how do you control them? All Sonos speakers and components are controlled by the Sonos Controller, an application that is free and can be downloaded to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac, Android, or PC. From the app you do everything. The initial setup, control system settings, and play music. It’s been very intuitively designed and works like a dream. Now, one last piece of hardware that you need to buy to make your Sonos speakers truly wireless and get your system up and running, is the Bridge. It’s a small white box that plugs directly into your home’s wireless router. It’s this piece that feeds all your Sonos speakers with the wireless music. Up to 30 speakers, in fact! The Bridge is priced at $50. The folks over at Sonos have engineered their software so tightly, that setup, from opening the box to having life-like beautiful sound pumping through your house is about 5 min. It’s truly astounding. G2 Computers carries the full line of Sonos products. We always have them set up and ready for a demo. So come on in to your local G2 and try them out!
